Rehabilitation Services Overview
OUR PROGRAM SERVICES
The Rehabilitation Services Department has various programs that assist individuals with disabilities to become employable. Our programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and we have agreements with the following agencies to provide services for individuals with disabilities in western Missouri and eastern Kansas communities, including the greater Kansas City area and surrounding cities:
- Missouri Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR)
- Kansas Social & Rehabilitation Services (VR)
- Kansas SRS Employment Preparation Services
- Veteran's Administration (VR)

The Rehabilitation Services Department assists individuals from any of the following groups:
- Brain Trauma: closed head injury & residuals
- Cognitive Impairment: mental retardation/developmental disabilities, learning disabilities
- Congenital: developmental disabilities since birth
- Convulsive: epilepsy or other seizure disorders
- Mental Illness: severe and/or persistent mental illness (i.e. schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, depression, personality disorders)
- Neuromuscular: multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy
- Orthopedic: amputation, back/knee/shoulder injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, paraplegia, quadriplegia
- Sensory: deaf or hard of hearing, deaf/blind, low vision
- Substance Abuse: alcohol and/or substance dependence
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Persons must have a disabling condition or other barrier which interferes with their vocational development and/or planning.
- Persons must have other vocational barrier(s) which interfere with obtaining competitive employment.
- Persons must be 16 years old or older.
- Must possess a Social Security card and picture identification or other documentation necessary for the I-9 form.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
- Persons must have one or more of the following functional limitations:
- Unemployed
- Employed beneath skill level
- Limited vocational skills
- Poor job retention
- Lack of adequate personal skills
- Lack of adequate social skills
- Lack of vocational skills
- Persons must possess, with reasonable accommodations, sufficient self-help skills including: basic personal hygiene, eating without assistance and capable of self administration of medication.
- Persons must be capable of communicating needs.
- Must give an affirmative response to the question, "Do you want to actively participate in planned (either Evaluation or ES) services?"
- Persons must be responsible for arranging their own transportation to services.
- Fees for services must be paid, typically by a third party. Consumers receiving services in rehabilitation programs are usually sponsored by referring agencies such as the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (Bi-state), Department of Mental Health, Veteran's Administration (Bi-state) or Private Rehabilitation vendors. Private pay is also acceptable.
- Current medical examination information should be available as appropriate.
- Persons with a history of incidents of harm to self or others will be considered on an individual case by case basis.
REFERRAL PROCESS
