Language And Culture Service

The JVS Language and Cultural Services (LCS) program of JVS was created to improve the health and well-being of the region’s non-English speaking residents as they access health care and social services by increasing the number and quality of trained interpreters in the community by providing interpreter training and interpreter provision services through our JVS Interpreter Services. JVS Language and Cultural Services also offers two-day Cultural Competency trainings to develop an understanding and appreciation of the dynamic differences present in every cross-cultural encounter. We have also begun to offer Cultural Competency Assessment for selected organizations, advanced medical interpreting courses in HIV/AIDS (Spanish bilingual) and behavioral mental health.

Immigrant and refugees are making a positive impact in our local cities and towns. The JVS Language and Cultural Services program can help your organization or business meet the needs of our region's growing immigrant and refugee communities. Emphasizing leadership through service, JVS Language and Cultural Services provides comprehensive, professional training to local and regional bilingual and bicultural interpreters to more effectively serve the region’s newcomer communities.

Bridging the Gap

JVS Language and Cultural Services offers Bridging the Gap, a forty-hour training curriculum geared toward the intermediate and beginning interpreter. The training program was developed and copyrighted by Cross Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP) of Seattle, WA, to be offered to qualified bilingual interpreters who want to improve their skills. JVS is the only organization serving Kansas and Western Missouri licensed by CCHCP to offer the training, which focuses on health care and social services interpreting. The course is provided at four sites throughout the state of Kansas, approximately five times per year in Kansas City, Missouri, and at least twice in rural Missouri. The course is heavily participatory, including practice sessions, role plays, and small group discussions. A certificate of successful completion is given to all participants who complete the course and pass a final test. For more information about courses, schedules and fees, please contact:

Cultural Competency for a Changing World

The JVS Language and Cultural Services program also provides Cultural Competency training. As the diversity of the populations that we serve continues to grow, the importance of cultural competency or "cultural and linguistic appropriateness" in the effective delivery of health and social services is undeniable. Our two-day Cultural Competency training aids in developing an understanding and appreciation of the dynamic differences present in every cross-cultural encounter. Participants in the training often include health care professionals, social service workers, government workers and others who work in the public sector. Participants develop the necessary skills to communicate across cultural boundaries and learn how to assess their organization’s overall level of Cultural Competency in order to achieve more culturally competent systems of care.

Through training in cultural competency, we also endeavor to develop the capacity of communities to advocate for improved policies that eliminate longstanding barriers of language, race and socioeconomic status. Additionally, JVS Language and Cultural Services sponsors the quarterly Kansas-Missouri Refugee-Immigrant Forum that provides current information to newcomer advocates in the bi-state region. JVS Interpreter Services

Additionally, we also offer an interpreter databank as a dispatch service to your agency or health care facility when you are in need of trained interpreters/translators. JVS is able to match an agency’s request for an interpreter with one of our trained contract interpreters. Our professionals speak more than 30 languages including Arabic, Somali, Dinka, Farsi and other rare and hard-to-find languages.

Skilled interpreters who speak the language of your clients increase your market base and ensure compliance with federal laws. All federally-funded entities must provide free language assistance in order to be in compliance with Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. We offer competitive rates and JVS handles billing and payment of the interpreter.
