BALTIMORE AVE. DIME STORE THRIVING
Remember the good ol' days when a trip to the dime store meant finding affordable treasures for just a pittance?

Those days have returned at the Baltimore Avenue Dime Store (located at 1608 Baltimore), operated by JVS! The Dime Store opened over a year ago providing the nearby downtown area with a perfect place to shop for every day needs. Whether it's a hot cup of coffee, for only a buck, snacks, tissues or batteries, the Dime Store has it on hand. Currently, store hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
In its first year, the Dime Store brought in $30,000 in gross sales - additional revenue that helps support JVS programs and services. However, the Dime Store goes beyond being just an additional revenue stream. The store is a training program for our employees in the Sheltered Workshop.
"The Dime Store offers opportunities for the workshop employees to learn new skills, interact with the public and be part of the Crossroads community," said Joy Foster, JVS Executive Director.
"Workshop employees wait on customers, set up displays, price items, decorate the windows, make signs and clean and prepare the used items for sale," she said.
One new element to The Dime Store is offering wonderful resale items. Most JVS donations from the public go directly to our refugee clients to set up their apartments or homes. Only items not required for refugee resettlement are tagged as resale items and placed in The Dime Store.
"We can generate revenue by selling some donated items so we can purchase what is required for the refugees," Foster said.
Store Manager Steve Lindsay said the variety of resale items is amazing - everything from crystal glasses and vases to silver trays and fine paintings.
"Customers are coming in several times a week to see what new resale items we may have," Lindsay said. "We put new items out several times a week, so you never know what treasure you'll find."
Several tables are set up in the store providing a perfect meeting place or spot to enjoy your coffee. The Dime Store offers weekly specials as well as coupons. To date, business has been good at the store with March bringing in $3,400 - but there's always room for more customers! While shelves are stocked, donations are always sought. JVS will pick up donations from your home according to your schedule. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Deborah Fiene, (816) 471-2808, ext. 1162.
So come enjoy a cup of coffee or a snack at a reasonable price and shop a little while-you never know what little treasure you may find!
