Interpreter Training Courses offered by JVS in 2010
Please read the course descriptions with dates and times carefully and follow the directions on the application. In 2010, we will require that fees be paid 3 weeks in advance of the class.

Information on courses available in Missouri:Courses are offered at the rate of $350 for Bridging the Gap and $100 for Advanced Training in Domestic Violence due to a generous grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City.
A certificate of completion cannot be awarded until payment has been received in full.

Advanced Interpreter Training in Domestic Violence
Course Description: This is a 14-hour course (two Saturdays) targeted to graduates of Bridging the Gap. The JVS Advanced Interpreter Training in Domestic Violence includes two days focused on cultural approaches to domestic violence advocacy, including extensive practice in interpreting through the use of role-play scenarios and case studies. The curriculum covers the social service system of care, the court system, along with specific legal and law enforcement issues related to immigrant women. Emergency and crisis situations will be covered. Raul O. Guerrero will be the instructor. Cost: $100 for the general public. The course is free of charge to Truman employees.
Bridging the Gap
Course Description: Bridging the Gap is a forty-hour training (five Saturdays) for beginning and intermediate medical/social service bilingual interpreters. The course offers participants a thorough grounding in the Interpreter’s Code of Ethics, the roles of interpreting, cultural competency and much more. The course is presented by Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) and taught by Raul O. Guerrero. Participants will take a final exam on the last day of class. A certificate of completion is awarded based on five-day attendance and a passing score on the final exam. All participants must submit a JVS application, attach a brief recommendation from a supervisor or affiliate with the application and speak with Cathy Anderson, the manager of Language and Cultural Services before entering the class. Advanced Course in Mental Health Interpreting
Course Description: This is an 8-hour course (one Saturday) targeted to graduates of Bridging the Gap. The JVS Advanced Interpreter Training in Mental Health Interpreting is focused on the skills necessary to interpret in a range of mental health settings, including centers for the treatment of alcohol and substance abuse. The course will focus on cultural approaches to mental health and offer extensive practice interpreting through the use of role-play scenarios and case studies. Interpreting skills are emphasized and practiced: keeping neutral, managing the flow of a session, interventions, and working with a care team in various counseling settings.
